The Curse of Strahd / Re: Into the Mists

"Your blood, lord Lucien, is by comparison as noble as pond water. There is no negotiation of taxes. You either pay what you owe, or we will be required to take it by force."

As she says this, the rest of the figures step out of the mists. They are an odd group, some peasants, a few soldiers, even some lesser nobility. Yet they all share Lady Gwynn's deathly pale complexion, and their features seem sharpened, like those of a snarling wolf.

Arscene, now that you have seen these symptoms across several individuals, you can safely conjecture that they are all under the effects of some kind of powerful curse. Though you are not totally certain about its identity, it seems eerily similar to historical accounts of the curse of the Vampyr, though such a curse has not been seen in quite some time.

"As tax collectors, i'm sure we with our noble blood can come to an agreement on the amount of coin our group needs to pay to pass this area!" Lucien Smiles looking at Lady Gwynn.

"Let us not resort to our more basic instincts, people of our advanced evolution should be able to come to a solution."

While peering through the ethereal plane, you only catch glimpses of the shadows of those persons on the material plane. They don't seem to exist in both, and there isn't anything new in the ethereal plane that you did not notice before. With your extensive knowledge of all things ethereal, however, this gives you some information, at least: none of those figures which surround you are specters, phantoms, or ghosts, instead existing entirely on the material plane.

Arscene looks up from his books and peers out of the window of the carriage as they slow down. Measuring the situation, he snaps his book shut and waits a few moments as Lucien and Darien step out of the carriage. Putting the book under his arm, he slides his satchel onto his shoulder and steps down from the carriage out into the night.

Stopping just behind the two aasimar, he stays silent. Using his mage hand to tilt his hat down below his eyes, Arscene closes his senses off from the material realms for an instant. Peering into the Ethereal Realm, Arscene searches for traces of this Lady Gwynn or other hints the Unseen World might provide.

"I am glad you have found such eloquent company," Lady Gwynn says with a wicked grin, nodding at Darien. "It is true, this is not my traditional domain, but then..." she begins flexing the fingers on her right hand, and you see sinewy muscles and veins begin to bulge in her forearm, "...these are not traditional times. I believe house Swann claimed these lands, yes? Well they now stand with house Hallor, and house Lornquar, and Renauld, and soon all of Erlkazar will be with us too. Much like your lady sister, if I am not mistaken."

"Now, Lady Gwynn when did this territory become the Hallors'?  We are not near the traditional Hallor lands.  You could not have over stepped your bounds so far to collect tax's in places foreign to you?"  Lucien eyes narrow.

Licking his lips Lucien says "But if taxes are so inclined in this area i'm sure that we have the necessary coin to pass."

If you recall, it's not really a book that can be read. You simply open it and are assailed by alien thoughts and images until your mind can no longer handle it, and then come away with some understanding of a new concept contained within. So far, you have learned of Yrgga, the Eye of Shadows, Great Taar Haak the Five-Headed Destroyer, and Norganas, the Finger of Oblivion, ancient evils who were sealed away with several other entities in a mountain fortress, which you cannot help but feel you are getting ever closer to. The book tells of the great power these entities possess, and how such power may be gained by their favor.

As far as which book she means, you have a feeling it's the book from the Shrine of the Depths, since you had it out just before this encounter.

"**** you" Darien growls.
What have I reas in this book so far? Also, is it obvious she wants the funken temple book and not my dream journal?

The woman smirks slightly, and says, "It is good to see that such... interesting... company had not sullied your noble tongue. I suppose you are at a disadvantage," she looks around at the figures in the mists, and then at your group, "perhaps in more ways than one. I am lady Gwynn. You will not have heard of me, I imagine, for my house and I have not been performing the customary noble functions for some time now. We have had... other matters to attend to. As for my offer, think of it as a tax collection. After all, you are passing through my lands. If that does not suit your tastes, well... Dealing with malcontents is a function I am still quite accustomed to."

Lucien, you would know that this forest has been contested territory for years, and is actually nowhere near the Hallor lands.

Lucien stands and steps slightly in front of Darien, his brow furrows and voice rings out "It's a good sight to see another noble of Erlkazar, But you seem to have me at a disadvantage. I've been away a while and do not recognize you, how can we do business without exchanging pleasantries? Hello House Hallor, Your house has always stood noble.  I Lucien and my comrades".

Lucien slowly waves his hand next to him toward his single carriage " are merely passing through, What is your offer for the book?"

Once Lucien finishing speaking his eyes flash toward Darien and sends out a telepathic connection "Do you know what secrets could be held in that book? and are you considering this deal?"
